Sermon: Sin week 2
Last week at The Discotheque Church’s in-person Grand Opening service, the sermon topic was Sin. The aim of the sermon was to clarify what sin actually is and what it is not , so that moving forward confusion about sin won’t be a snare — a stumbling block — that trips you up and causes you to fall into unrighteousness.
For those of you that were in attendance let’s see who remembers…
For those of you who were not there with us… sin is purely disobedience to God. (take the poll above to get a more detailed breakdown)
In fact we saw in the example of Saul that sin, can at times, look like what is morally right, logical, reasonable or justifiable to man
and that is why the Bible tells us, lean not on your own understanding but in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path.
When we do the right thing according to our own: mind, family, friends, community, culture, school, employer, field of study, religion, society we can be setting ourselves up for consequences because the conclusions we come to and the plans that we make and hence the actions we then take end up missing the mark and falling short of what God wanted.
The Bible encourages believers to not just be hearers of the word, as far too many of us are, but it encourages us to be doers of the word also, which far too little of us are. TDC is all about being and cultivating doers of the word and so this week you have an assignment, read Deuteronomy 28 and tell me the verse(s) where the curse, that befell Saul for his disobedience, is located.
Many of us willfully (* unapologetically sin, repeatedly ) sin because we are unaware that there are consequences other than Hell (which we may or may not fully believe in) attached to sinning. Others of us sin because we are “saved” and we think that because we are saved that we can just plead the blood of Jesus or go to church regularly and that will make up for our sinning and allow us to make it to Heaven anyway. But boy oh boy are we wrong!
Once you are saved it is true that you can never loose your salvation but many people who believe they are saved are mistaken (YIKES!) Scripture says:
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. (Matthew 7:21)
'What should we say? Should we keep on sinning, so that God's gift of undeserved grace will show up even better? No, we should not! If we are dead to sin, how can we go on sinning? ' (Romans 6:1-2)
'No sacrifices can be made for people who decide to sin after they find out about the truth. They are God's enemies, and all they can look forward to is a terrible judgment and a furious fire. ' (Hebrews 10:26-27)
'Everyone who sins breaks God's law, because sin is the same as breaking God's law. You know Christ came to take away our sins. He isn't sinful, and people who stay one in their hearts with him won't keep on sinning. If they do keep on sinning, they don't know Christ, and they have never seen him. Children, don't be fooled. Anyone who does right is good, just like Christ himself. Anyone who keeps on sinning belongs to the devil. He has sinned from the beginning, but the Son of God came to destroy all that he has done. God's children cannot keep on being sinful. His life-giving power lives in them and makes them his children, so they cannot keep on sinning. ' (1 John 3:4-9)
So while you cannot loose your salvation you can certainly be living in denial — falsely secure — assuming that you are saved but are not.
In addition to false salvation there are curses, as you saw if you did the assignment above, that are attached to sinning, especially for the unbeliever, and for the believer even though Jesus became the curse for you as he died on the cross you still remove yourself from God’s presence and protection when you sin, hence giving the enemy opportunity to strike, opportunity to come into your life to steal, kill, and destroy!
Today I invite you to think back over your life… what did you do last night, last week, last month….what is in your highlight reel of memories and experiences… what are you looking forward to doing in the near future… and ask yourself, if God was seeing what you were thinking about ( which he can)
would he approve or disapprove?
Are the things that ran through your mind things that God told you, through scripture, that you shouldn’t do?
Did the things that ran through your mind included anything that God told you to do ?
Do you think that you are truly saved or will you get to the pearly gates and be turned away because you did not do the will of The Father you just simply looked the part and spent plenty of time in the pews and in the building?
The “fat lady” has not yet sung as the politically incorrect idiom goes… you may have been lying to yourself (and others) for a long long time but you still have a chance to get yourself together — and that time is right now! Tomorrow is not promised so do what you gotta do now as you read through this weeks message.
In a sermon that left a mark on me as a teen the minister asked the church “ If you died right now would you be 100% sure that you would make it into Heaven? If not then it is time to become sure” I was a pretty good kid but his words made me wanna check and double check …was I as “good” as I thought? Was I living right? would I make it into Heaven if I died right then as he spoke? I wanted to be all the way sure! Don’t you want to be all the way sure!?
Become sure today!
Confess your sins to God (though He already knows what they are He wants you to tell Him what they are with your own mouth)
Forgive all those who have wronged you (God will only forgive you as much as you have forgiven others)
Ask Jesus Christ simply to be your Lord and Savior
THEN stop willfully sinning turn away from the people, behaviors, thoughts, shows, music, entertainment, and places that pulled you into sin and do something else ( it is impossible to keep willfully living in sin and still be saved… everybody sins including Christians but Christians go down fighting they don’t unapologetically sin… and when they fall they get back up again, confess ,ask for forgiveness, and continue to attempt righteousness)
